Wooderra sees itself as a brand for tropical wood products that are truly sustainable and not just pretending to be it. The brand was launched by the two Panamanian companies Timber Resource Management and Panama Teak Forestry. Both companies are specialized in alternative and environmentally friendly sources of tropical timber. They work hand in hand to ensure a long-term supply of sustainable Wooderra products.
Wooderra's mission is to diversify from the classic tropical wood market by offering only products from really sustainable sources. All Wooderra products are invariably made either from sunken wood from the Bayano lake or FSC certified teak from the agro plantations in Santiago.

What about quality?

These alternative sources of tropical timber are not inferior to timber from the rainforest. Independent studies already have been carried out on reservoir wood. The results of them show that this wood has even better properties and is even more durable in comparison to timber from rainforests. As well, the teak plantation in Santiago is a pilot project for sustainable land use and plantation management.
For us as Tropical Hardwood, our products must be uncompromisingly sustainable. That's why we work very closely with Wooderra. This enables us to put your requirements into action and to offer exclusively Wooderra's sunken tropical hardwood and teak.

How diversify Wooderra and Tropical Hardwood from other suppliers?

The classic market for tropical wood was and still is fragmented today. That means, before a wooden product arrives at its final destination, it has already passed many interstations in most cases.
Not with Wooderra and Tropical Hardwood! With us you get everything from a single source and in addition you get no product off the shelf, but exactly what you need. Wooderra Teak is also FSC certified and the salvaging of the sunken wood is licensed by the government in Panama in consultation with the tribal leaders of the indigenous people of the region.

Good to know:

Panama as a country is one of the pioneers in protecting the tropical rainforest. In Panama, large parts of the primary forest have already been declared as nature reserves. Presumably more areas will follow in the future.

What does a classic tropical timber supply chain look like?

It depends a lot on the country of origin and the local conditions. The profit from lumbering rainforest also plays an important role as a source of income for governments in some countries. You can think of a classic supply chain as something like this:
Some men or a group get together and cut down trees and then sell the logs to a local middlesman. He buys logs from different groups and delivers them to a sawmill. The sawmill then processes the logs into products, some of which are used locally or purchased from an exporter. The exporter then sells and transports the wood to a timber importer in the destination country, which then places it on the market.
By local taxes and compulsory contributions or protection money different groups profit indirectly from this. Unfortunately, environmental protection and sustainability often fall by the wayside. Environmental protection organizations and associations for the protection of the rainforest frequently write about cases in which local and often criminal structures benefit from tropical timber trading.
The complexity of this traditional supply chain makes it almost impossible to track where the wood is coming from and what cosumers are buying. The new EU directives require a proof that the imported timber comes from legal sources. But with this original supply chain, it is very difficult and sometimes impossible to proof the origin of a product.
Wooderra and Tropical Hardwood are creating a transparent supply of teak and tropical hardwoods that not only meet, but exceed the requirements of the European Union. By buying our timber you always know exactly where your teak product came from and you can be sure that you have bought a really sustainable product.
